A lot of celebrants are rubbish.

I get it, choosing one is bloody hard. Where the hell do you even start? Unless you’ve seen one in action, how do you decipher how someones website is going to translate to running a 30 minute ceremony?

Getting a good celebrant is legit (in my humble opinion) one of the most important things you can do for your wedding. A ceremony shouldn’t be something you have to get through to get to the good stuff. It should be something memorable and beautiful and transcendent and additive in it’s own way. It should affirm why the hell the two of you love each other so much in the first place. It should move people and make them laugh and make them cry and entertain them. But. To do that, you need a celebrant who knows how. Who hasn’t been rehashing the same tired speech and tropes for 20 years.

These are all people who straddle the hard line between irreverence and sentimentality well, who can make 100 or so strangers both laugh and feel. Sometimes in the same breath, which is not an easy feat. Who’ll make your Aunt Judy shed a tear but do so with a cheeky glint in their eye and crack a joke a second later.

There are no kickbacks here, these are just people who I’ve seen hold a crowd in the palm of their hand time and time again (and I’ve seen hundreds of weddings at this point), and who provide an exceptional and uplifting experience. Who can turn a ceremony into something joyful and transcendent.

All of these people are phenomenal at what they do. My suggestion would be to find someone who’s personality vibes with you. Who you can envision fitting in with your mates and having a drink with. They have the celebranting part down pat.

Without any further ado, here’s my curated list of seven of the best marriage celebrants in Sydney. I’ve seen hundreds. These are (in no particular order) the best.

You’ll love him if - you want to give your guests something to talk about for the rest of the day (and night!). Adam’s the kind of guy that you want to have a beer with. He’s the type of celebrant who will more than happily put his arse on the line (so to speak) to make sure your wedding is the best that any of your guests have ever seen. You’ll laugh and cry, probably from laughing too much. Adam has this chill vibe that instantly settles those nerves before sucker-punching them in the feels. Adam’s mantra - the ceremony should be so uniquely “you” and leaving your mates asking, how long have you and Adam been friends for?

You’ll love her if - you also love a strong Gin and Tonic, a beautiful wedding, and the finer things in life! Allegra's super power is that she balances the romance of a ceremony with a whole lot of laughter and fun. Your guests will leave wondering how long you've been mates with Allegra - she's just that good at getting to know you. A love-story-telling master, groomsman wrangler and parent charmer. Nicky prides herself on getting to know her couples and loves helping them feel comfortable in what when you think about it has the potential become a pretty uncomfortable moment - “hey everyone, look at us, we’re getting married!” Working together on your ceremony she’ll make sure that you’re smiling, crying and laughing on your way to getting hitched.

Victoria has been around the block a fair few times in this wedding game.  In doing so, she’s gained a metric tonne of insight into what turns a ceremony from the 30 minutes before the bar opens to the best part of your entire day.  She also takes a lot of pride and care in making sure you are both fully represented, as well as fully present, by doing everything in her power to create a safe, relaxed space for you to celebrate your love.

You’ll lover her if - You'll love her if you need someone to light up your wedding from Acknowledgement of Country to last drinks. She’s a stupendous storyteller, a natural presenter (not to mention professionally trained for tv and radio) and let’s be honest, a seriously slick outfitter. She’ll curate your ceremony, baptise your dance floor and have your guests eating out of the palm of her hand whilst your love story is heard louder than ever before. Be quick though - she marries a limited number of lovers per year. You’ll book her as your Celebrant but keep her as your mate, trust me.
