Suzanne & Aengus

Sydney city elopement

On egg tarts and intention and ritual and piping hot noodles.

In their vows, Aengus promised to tell Suzanne three things he loves about her every day, a ritual they started when they went to bed one night and Suzanne was upset and it did such an excellent job of cheering her up he decided to do it every day since. They also go on the same winding 9 km walk every weekend to connect and decompress and be present together.

I say this to illustrate that I was struck by how incredibly intentional both of them are. How incredibly they SEE one another. How they communicate and support and lift up and inspire and actively make the choice to celebrate the hell out of one another each and every day. It was inspiring, and the first wedding at which Iโ€™ve shed a tear during the ceremony in a very long time (shout out to Married By Allegra the best in the biz for rockin it as always) - because of how wonderfully put and thoughtful their vows were.

So much of this day felt wildly serendipitous. We stopped at the Opera House and the steps were deserted bar one man playing a harmonica. We stopped at a tree under which they had one of their first dates and where, seven years later, Aengus proposed, and 50 m away in a rotunda a man was playing classical music on a cello, whom after I asked graciously allowed them to have a dance together in this tiny little structure with him serenading them.

And so what could be more romantic and honest and reflective of your daily life, of the rituals that have built and sustained your identity together than officially joining one another at a place you walk together every weekend, with only those you care most about in attendance. And what better way to finish off the day with fresh baked egg tarts from your favourite Chinese bakery and some piping hot noodles and milkshakes from your go-to cheap and cheerful Chinatown haunt.

So hereโ€™s to days and lives full of intention, to dudes in tracksuits rockin the hell out a cello, to fresh egg tarts and wedding days that dare to play with convention. To Suzanne and Aengus and the stupidly wonderful life they have built together.

Thank you dudes, it was a joy.

Enjoy
