Questionable (read: bad) puns and unagreed-upon-who-instigated-the-late-night-phone-call-that-first-time arguments. From such humble beginnings did this cracker of a day, and their story, unfold.

This was one of my favourite days in quite a while for a whole lot of reasons.

By definition I see a lot of weddings - and everyone displays love and affection (especially in front of crowds) in different ways - but the look on Mat’s face as he saw Erika for the first time, and the alternating looks of unmitigated joy and overwhelmed emotion on both of their faces during the part of Mat’s speech directed at Erika was some of the most unrestrained joy and naked feeling I’ve had the pleasure to witness in a long time.

I’ve also rarely been made to feel so welcome and comfortable. By the time I left at the end of the night both of them gave me half a dozen full embraces, and Mat gave me a big drunken kiss on the cheek. I say this not to make it about me, but just as I feel it speaks to the unbelievable warmth and openness of each of their characters, and it explains the fierce love they seem to have engendered in so many.

This was a recipe in doing in right. Honouring the two of them and celebrating their story whilst providing space and a platform to show all the people in their lives that have loved and lifted them along the way their appreciation. What a good boy and girl.

But enough from me. A few moments to look out for

  • Mat laying eyes on Erika for the first time and absolutely losing it

  • Erika getting emotional during her mum’s speech…and then dancing during her dad’s

  • …a hand lick and an attempted butt bite

  • Big embraces after the ceremony, and particularly a few moments between Mat and his gran

  • Wanders around the Newcastle baths
